New York, NY– November 8 – Single Stop, a nonprofit organization that helps low-income individuals and families access vital resources and services, has expanded its benefit screener with the addition of the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). LIHEAP is a federally funded program that assists low-income households with their energy bills, including expenses such as heating and cooling, furnace repairs or replacements, and insulation improvements.

According to the Rocky Mountain Institute, “low-income families spend a larger percentage of their annual income- three times more on average- on energy costs than other non-low-income families,” – and with soaring energy costs, low-income families face ever greater economic burdens. However, a recent U.S. Department of Health and Human Services study found that a significant number of eligible households do not sign up for LIHEAP.

“Rising energy costs are squeezing many households financially, requiring families to make tough choices between choosing many essential services,” said Martin Hanna, President and CEO of Single Stop. “As we head into winter, adding LIHEAP as one of the benefits Single Stop screens for will provide critical financial support to families so they are safe and comfortable in their homes.”
