The Fedcap Group Acquires Spotlight on Poverty and Opportunity

Bill Nichols to Join as Spotlight Editor and Senior Fellow at Fedcap’s Community Impact Policy Institute

New York, NY— The Fedcap Group, a global network of nonprofit agencies dedicated to advancing economic and social well-being, announced today that it has acquired Spotlight on Poverty and Opportunity (https://spotlightonpoverty.org), a leading nonpartisan platform for advancing informed discussion on poverty and economic mobility in the United States.

As part of this acquisition, Spotlight will become a signature initiative of The Fedcap Group’s Community Impact Policy Institute—the organization’s internal think tank focused on evidence-based policymaking, applied research, and public-sector policy innovation.

The Fedcap Group also announced that Bill Nichols, a veteran political journalist and former founding managing editor of Politico and Senior Advisor at Freedman Consulting, will join the Community Impact Policy Institute as Senior Fellow and continue to serve as Editor of Spotlight on Poverty and Opportunity. Nichols brings decades of experience at the intersection of journalism and public policy, having held senior editorial positions at Politico and USA Today, among others.

“The acquisition of Spotlight on Poverty marks a major milestone in our efforts to elevate the national conversation around ways of driving economic mobility for underserved communities through policy innovation,” said Christine McMahon, President and CEO of The Fedcap Group. “With Bill Nichols joining our Community Impact Policy Institute, we are doubling down on our commitment to credible research, cross-sector dialogue, and practical policy solutions that drive change.”

“This acquisition reflects the Board’s vision for expanding The Fedcap Group’s voice in public policy and shaping solutions to our society’s most pressing challenges,” said Mark O’Donoghue, Chair of The Fedcap Group Board of Directors. “Spotlight on Poverty has long been a trusted source for ideas that bridge politics and practice—we’re excited to see it thrive within our growing ecosystem.”

“When we started Spotlight almost 20 years ago, we sought to be a nonpartisan source of information for people looking for the best policy ideas on low income policy. We are so proud that there are now tens of thousands of followers and subscribers, and excited that Fedcap is going to make this product even more useful – and hopefully reach even more people,” said Tom Freedman, CEO and Co-Founder of Freedman Consulting, LLC, and a longtime advisor to Spotlight. “Hats off to all our co-founders who started this as a dream, and to The Fedcap Group and the amazing Bill Nichols for taking the baton.”

“We are so proud of our legacy as co-founders of Spotlight, and we are thrilled to see the initiative continue with Fedcap,” said Amy Buckley, partner at The Hatcher Group. “I know Bill Nichols will maintain Spotlight’s role as an indispensable resource – one that champions innovative and nonpartisan efforts to address poverty and income inequality in the United States. That mission is especially critical today.”

Founded in 2007, Spotlight on Poverty and Opportunity has published thousands of commentaries from bipartisan political leaders, nonprofit executives, scholars, and grassroots advocates on issues ranging from income inequality and housing affordability to education, healthcare, and workforce development.

Under The Fedcap Group’s stewardship, Spotlight will expand its editorial offerings, relaunch in-person and virtual policy forums, and partner with national and regional stakeholders to convene timely conversations on poverty alleviation strategies. Plans are underway to host Spotlight events in Washington, D.C., New York, and other key policy centers.

“Joining The Fedcap Group gives Spotlight a powerful platform to connect research with real-world practice,” said Bill Nichols.  “We’re going to bring sharp, accessible, and actionable voices to the conversation—and I couldn’t be more excited to help lead that effort.”
