SaverLife

“People are thinking about their financial situation now more than ever,” says David Derryck, the Chief Impact Officer of SaverLife — a nonprofit that provides incentives and resources to help low- and middle-income Americans save money and build financial security.

While interest in SaverLife has been growing steadily over the past few years, the economic fallout and job loss created by the pandemic created a spike – more than 100,000 people have joined since the pandemic began. “April was our biggest month,” says Derryck, “and May trouncedApril. We’re on track to have the same thing happen in June.”

The organization is in a position to handle the growth thanks to two retired tech executives who joined the 20-employee team last year as Encore Fellows — seasoned professionals ready for paid, high-impact assignments in social sector organizations.

The first, George Manning, brought decades of experience working for technology companies including Salesforce and Cruise, a self-driving car company. He became SaverLife’s Chief Technologist.

“George helped us move about 150,000 members to a new platform,” Derryck says. “He guided us to establish a variety of different processes, and our team could see how much his experience made a difference.”
When the pandemic hit, Manning and SaverLife pivoted to develop a new product that distributed $500 cash grants — funded by the organization’s donors — to members in need. “That was something kind of remarkable,” says Derryck. “The Emergency Response Fund went from design to implementation in about eight days.” So far, more than 2,500 people have received emergency cash payments.

When Manning’s one-year fellowship ended, he was hired as the Chief Technology Officer at SaverLife. “It feels good to be creating prosperity for thousands of working families by helping them save and invest in their futures,” Manning says.

Carol Kasten, the second Encore Fellow, joined Saverlife as its Information Security and Governance Manager, helping them strengthen their position as a non-profit financial technology company and allowing them to work with large companies that have security requirements for their vendors. “Small organizations fall down on compliance a lot of the time,” Derryck says, “and there’s no way we’d be where we are now without her.”

Like Manning, Kasten was hired by SaverLife after her fellowship ended and now holds the title of Chief Information Security Officer, leading initiatives to prevent fraud and compliance. She says her work for Saverlife.org feels particularly meaningful during the pandemic.

“I’m very proud to be part of an organization that helped people prepare for the recent economic downturn by teaching them the importance of saving money and is also helping them during the downturn by quickly distributing funds to those in need.”

When Derryck became Chief Impact Officer three years ago, the SaverLife platform had 30,000 members. Today, there are 350,000 members. The goal is to reach one million by 2022.

That kind of growth might not have been possible without the Encore Fellows™™. “It’s been a fantastic experience for us,” Derryck says. “If you’re an organization that’s trying to grow, the challenge and opportunity with the Encore Fellowships program is really this: How can you utilize the skill set of someone that’s coming with more experience than many of your staff, most likely, and maximize what they bring?”

First Tech Fund Joins Civic Hall to Expand Opportunities in NYC’s Innovation Ecosystem to Underserved Individuals

First Tech Fund Joins Civic Hall to Expand Opportunities in NYC’s Innovation Ecosystem to Underserved Individuals

Civichall-fg
NEW YORK, NY (January 5, 2024) —Civic Hall is partnering with First Tech Fund to enhance workforce training opportunities for low-income high school students in New York City, particularly within the innovation ecosystem. This collaboration will allow the First Tech Fund to provide additional workforce development programs and pathways for high school and college-aged students across New York City.
The First Tech Fund has been at the forefront providing underserved communities educational opportunities. It has empowered over 300 high school students through its year-long fellowship program, offering mentorship, college preparation, career readiness, and pathways to future opportunities since 2020. The recent launch of the Dual Impact Internship Program, piloted in 2023, successfully placed underrepresented college-aged students in paid eight-week internships. Scaling from 2 to 20 seats in 2024, the First Tech Fund will expand its impact, supported by Civic Hall’s network and resources to meet the growing needs of its 125+ college-aged alumni.

“We are excited that the First Tech Fund team has become members of Civic Hall to provide opportunities to underserved communities to join our collaborative network that will provide bright futures in New York City’s innovation ecosystem,” said Seema Shah, Executive Director at Civic Hall.  “Our partnership will support even more students across NYC to access diverse pathways to educational and career opportunities.”

“We’ve heard constantly from our student community about the difficulties they face once they arrive to college when navigating the complex internship process and we’ve seen how transformational it can be to help students land their first meaningful work experience after their freshman year. With more companies cutting staff and making reductions in DEI programs, it’s more important now than ever to invest in this programming that is creating real systems change,” said Josue De Paz, CEO and co-founder of First Tech Fund, “We’re excited for the numerous opportunities that Civic Hall’s hub of partners and resources will open for students.”

In Spring 2024, the First Tech Fund will open applications for its free fellowship program for New York City high school students. The program offers virtual workshops, mentorship, career exploration, and networking opportunities.

Fulfilling the Bold Promise of Civic Hall at Union Square

Fulfilling the Bold Promise of Civic Hall at Union Square

Civichall
This past week we celebrated a new partnership with The Data School NY—a data analytics and visualization training and workforce placement program. Our partners at The Data School are a model for diversifying the tech workforce by providing exceptional skills training and job placement for individuals who may not even have dreamed that a career in the sector was a possibility. While many other providers talk the talk about diversifying the tech sector, the Data School is walking the walk.
Construction at Civic Hall at Union Square is almost complete and it’s deeply fulfilling to finally be turning a great vision into reality. Civic Hall at Union Square is one of the most innovative and remarkable spaces. But it’s not just the space itself; it’s the ecosystem being created inside this remarkable space that is going to change lives.
When I look at the space at Civic Hall at Union Square, I see it through the eyes of all the people whose opportunities expand exponentially because it has so many of the ingredients that we often talk about—but leave out—of a holistic approach. It’s not as though we must think hard or make up reasons why some people don’t succeed. We know most of the reasons people don’t succeed. And a lot of it can be summed up in the word opportunity—broadly defined.
That’s what Civic Hall will offer for countless individuals. Not only will Civic Hall provide world class training and education—like with our new partners The Data School or LaGuardia Community College; it will also provide access to new networking opportunities and forge relationships and synergies for the talented individuals who walk through our door. For example, thanks to a generous financial contribution by Bread Financial, Civic Hall will be conducting networking/job events to those in our training programs as well as the surrounding community and tech sector in New York City; will allow us to screen everyone who walks in the door with our leading benefits program, Single Stop; and will stand up a financial literacy program.
In other words, individuals need a holistic opportunity to get past the hurdles they face. Civic Hall is not just an extraordinary physical space, but a unique place where we will break down barriers to opportunity for talented individuals who want to get ahead.

Bridging the Distance to Economic Well-Being Unites The Fedcap Group Family

Bridging the Distance to Economic Well-Being Unites The Fedcap Group Family

Celebration of The Power of Possible Gala 2022: A Tremendous Success!

On Monday night four hundred supporters of The Fedcap Group joined in person and hundreds more virtually to celebrate the impact of our work across our international footprint.

Guests were greeted by Gala Ambassadors, graduates from The Fedcap Group’s Leadership Academy. Setting the visual stage for the evening was a footbridge created and built by students at Apex Technical School, a subsidiary of The Fedcap Group. Click here to watch video of the evening and click here to view the gala program.

“We’re a very diverse group of people, yet for all the diversity, we are united by a belief that when people are inspired to dream big, and are offered the right kind of supports at the right time, they can build a bridge—not just for survival, but building a life, a pathway to sustained economic well-being for themselves and their families.” said Christine McMahon, President and CEO of The Fedcap Group in her opening comments.

Ed Bolognini, Executive Director of ReServe and Wildcat; Martin Hanna, President of Single Stop; and Grant Collins, Sr. VP of Workforce Development set the stage—describing The Fedcap Group’s areas of practice that are leveraged to help people achieve their goals of sustainable, economic well-being.

In testimonials to The Power of Possible, Devin Silveira from Maine, and Daniel Keech from the UK, shared their stories of how their lives turned from despair to hope, from fear to confidence. Their stories reminded us all that one significant setback can set in motion a downward spiral of events that takes tremendous effort and a village of support to overcome. And they inspired us with their courage, describing how taking one step at a time toward a different future can fundamentally change a life. We are so grateful to Daniel and Devin for their willingness to share their journeys with us.

Dinner entertainment featured Max Clayton, a Broadway performer with a long list of credits including filling in for Hugh Jackman in “The Music Man,” and Ariana Reed Casasanto, a classically-trained singer who serves as The Fedcap Group’s Director of Engagement. They performed a wonderful arrangement of Bridge Over Troubled Water, and Somewhere Over the Rainbow.

Throughout the evening individuals and companies who ensure that The Fedcap Group continues its mission were honored. We remembered Dick Cattani, CEO of Restaurant Associates—a long time friend of The Fedcap Group who recently passed. We presented USI and its Chairman and CEO Mike Sicard, with our Corporate Partnership Award. USI has worked with The Fedcap Group since 2010 on our healthcare benefits and compliance oversight of our 403(b) plans for employees. “USI’s strong culture is a critical element of their success. They are committed to knowledge sharing, innovation, and continuous quality improvement,” said Nancy Settergren, a Fedcap Rehabilitation Board Member.

Mark O’Donoghue, Chairman of The Fedcap Group Board of Directors and Larry Ach, Co-Chair of the Fedcap Rehabilitation Services Board presented the Leo Mayer Award for Distinguished Service to Peter Aschkenasy. Dr. Leo Mayer was a renowned physician, beloved community member, and above all, he loved Fedcap.  He dedicated 25 years of his life to the work of helping individuals with barriers live full lives.  Both Mark and Larry emphasized that Peter has this same volunteer’s heart.  Among the dignitaries who paid tribute to Peter were New York City Mayor Eric Adams; Congresswoman Nydia Velazquez; and Linda Johnson, CEO of Brooklyn Public Library.

As the balloons dropped and images of thousands bridging the distance to economic well-being were on the screen, we ended our celebration. Many of those who walk through our doors start life in a place that makes bridging the distance to economic well-being seem unreachable. But all of us at The Fedcap Group believe in the Power of Possible—it is not just a tag line but a way of life. And we know that, with the right support, people can achieve their dreams.
